Come party crabtree style in the truely majestic mountains of Mendocino National Forest. |
Long ago, the general tone of things at crabtree moved on from the self-conscious happening to a more jubilant occasion where the audience participates because it's more fun to do so than not. And all tribal stompers are invited to wear ecstatic dress and bring their own gadgets(solar power will be provided).

Bear Creek Campground USFS Mendocino National Forest - Lake County - California FREE & OPEN all year - maximum stay 14 days 16 picnic tables & grilles + 2 toilets elevation - 2,000 feet

Situated near the edge of the Snow Mountain wilderness area, Bear Creek is more isolated than most campgrounds. Rarely occupied by more than one or two campers, this primitive campground offers beauty and solitude. And it's a pretty spot, set beside Bear Creek near its confluence with Blue Slides Creek, with plenty of spacing between campsites, and only about 6 miles northwest of crabtree hot springs. |

From 3,592 ft. atop the northwestern ridge of Elk Mountain, forest road M-10 descends the northeastern side of the mountain, winding downward through dense stands of knobcone pine, to its crossing of Rice Fork Eel River at an elevation of about 2,040 feet.

Eastward view of Rice Fork Eel River crossing on forest road M-10 - about 30+ feet wide. From here to the campground, it's a pleasant drive through an oak tree forest, with some rolling hills and large open meadows. |
The last road sign is about a quarter mile from the first toilet. |

|
From its source, Bear Creek drops rapidly down a steep canyon and flows southwesterly for about 9.1 miles, adding its tributary Blue Slides Creek, passing underneath a concrete bridge and crossing forest road 17N16, before entering Rice Fork Eel River on the right about 7.2 miles upstream from Lake Pillsbury.

From Bear Creek to Crabtree...
|
|
After crossing the creek, follow 17N16 for about 3 miles, then turn right onto forest road 17N04(Twin Valley Road), and follow for about 2 miles to its crossing of Rice Fork Eel River & Salt Creek.

|
+ it's okay to have a campfire by the roadside, along with a carefree all night party. |
And in the summertime, some folks like to have a party at the hot springs. |
