c. 1906 - John Fletcher Crabtree and his wife Elizabeth at the first Twin Valley School.

About 1910, a second school house was built.

The school house was on the south side of the road, about 2 miles northwest of Twin Valleys in what is known as Wild Bill Valley.

Twin Valley School was established in 1899, and permanently closed in 1920, due to lack of students.

c. 1855 - John Fletcher Crabtree - born in Virginia on Apr 13, 1824

When a young man, John moved to Missouri where he met and married Elizabeth in 1844. The couple traveled west to California in 1852, and first homesteaded in Contra Costa County, before finally settling in Lake County around 1870 at Twin Valleys and then crabtree hot springs.

Although no water was ever bottled from crabtree hot springs, Mr. Crabtree commercialized the springs, but only in a very small way, and finally sold the place around 1907 to an Upper Lake businessman named Packwood.

THEN A MISTAKE WAS DISCOVERED.

About 1907, Samuel T. Packwood, a farmer and capitalist from Upper Lake, was intending to build a resort at crabtree hot springs, when it was discovered that Crabtree had never owned the hot springs.

Many years earlier, Crabtree had mistakenly filed on the wrong section, and when surveyed, according to the Forest Service around 1907, crabtree hot springs were still on government land. Consequently, Packwood also never owned the hot springs.

Crabtree and Packwood had both built a wagon road from Twin Valleys to the hot springs, but their road washed out, and for many years there was only a trail to the springs until Twin Valley Road opened in 1933-1934.

The opening of Twin Valley Road allowed continuous public use of the springs, which were still on government land, and crabtree hot springs soon became universally recognized as a great place for a wild & free picnic party.
Twin Valley Road follows the original route of the wagon road, and is the most reliable road to the hot springs, as it is well maintained and kept open all year by the county.

Located on Rice Fork of the Eel River, crabtree hot springs is historic and world famous as the recreational headquarters of Mendocino National Forest.
