* Jerusalem Syndrome is a rare travel psychosis that afflicts tourists when visiting the holy land. Type III is the best known type, whereby a previously sane person will experience a "brief psychotic episode" after arriving in Jerusalem, by assuming the persona of an intense religious character. Typically, the person recovers after a few weeks or after being removed from the locality. John the Baptist is the most popular choice for men, while women prefer to become the Virgin Mary.

c. 1890 - John Crabtree and his wife Elizabeth in the vicinity
of crabtree hot springs, with their covered wagon in the background. They
had 12 children - 4 daughters and 8 sons.
About 1875, Orin was the first of the sons to homestead at the springs. Later, John Crabtree built his home, on a bench of land, about 150 yards southwest from the junction of Rice Fork Eel River and Salt Creek. Two of his other adult sons had cabins nearby. About 1907, Crabtree sold his land to Sam Packwood, a banker from Upper Lake, who planned to build a resort at Crabtree Hot Springs. THEN A MISTAKE WAS DISCOVERED. When homesteading, Crabtree had mistakenly filed on the wrong section, and never owned the hot springs. According to the Forest Service around 1907, Crabtree Hot Springs were still on government land. |
Historical notes, available at the Lakeport Museum, document the mistake with the deed to Crabtree Hot Springs.

c. 1885 - Sheriff Samuel T. Packwood and his wife Margaret at their home in Kittitas County, WA. As president of several irrigation canal enterprises, Packwood was a recognized authority, and leader in the promotion and successful completion of large scale irrigation projects. He served as Kittitas County's second sheriff from 1884-1889. However, Mrs. Packwood suffered from asthma, and with hopes of benefiting her health, the Packwood's moved to Upper Lake in 1905. With gratifying results, her afflicition practically disappeared with the change of climate. Later, the Packwood's moved back to Kittitas County, WA. About 1907, Samuel T. Packwood was one of the most important businessmen in Lake County, when he aquired the property that everyone thought included crabtree hot springs. Packwood put up the money to have a reasonably good road built from Twin Valleys to the springs, and planned to build a resort. However, his resort plans were held up over a question of clear title to the hot springs, when it was discovered that many years earlier, Crabtree had make a mistake and filed on the wrong section. Perhaps if title to the springs had proved reliable, Packwood might have built another of the once famous Lake County mineral springs resorts, but nothing in the way of resort buildings was ever built at crabtree hot springs, as Packwood never owned the hot springs. The Packwood family estate held the property for many years before abandoning it all in the mid 1930's. |
So, according to the Forest Service, due to a mistake by Crabtree, the hot springs were still on government land long after Packwood had died, and with the completion of Twin Valley Road in 1933-1934, the springs were forever easily accessible to the public, and Crabtree Hot Springs soon became world famous as the perfect spot for a romantic holiday picnic party. |
