crabtree hot springs - 18367 twin valley road

unblock the road

letter to the editor - Lake County Record-Bee

reprinted

A road is like a river. No private property owner can block a navigable river that flows through their property. It's against the law. Imagine what would happen if all private property owners could block all public roads going through their property.

Twin Valley Road, through Mendocino National Forest, is a MAJOR emergency fire exit road. To block speedy travel on it to anyone trying to escape a forest fire is wrong, and anyone intentionally blocking Twin Valley Road at Crabtree Hot Springs should be liable for a very serious criminal offense if lives are lost.

It has always been my understanding, from talking with a deputy sheriff officer several years ago, that Twin Valley Road is considered by the Lake County Sheriff's Office to be an EXTREMELY IMPORTANT emergency fire exit road that can not be blocked by the private property owner at Crabtree Hot Springs. Recently, the owner blocked the road.

Currently, Twin Valley Road remains blocked at Crabtree Hot Springs, so that now anyone unfortunately fleeing a forest fire in that direction would be trapped. That's not good.

There have been numerous lightning strike fires in the forest areas along Twin Valley Road in recent years. Correctly, the Sheriff's Office realizes that it is a VITAL emergency fire exit road, connecting other areas of the forest together, and can not be blocked on the mere whim of the private property owner at Crabtree Hot Springs.

Twin Valley Road 17N04 through Mendocino National Forest, as an ESSENTIAL interconnecting emergency fire exit road, must always be open for anyone seeking immediate personal safety in distance from a forest fire.

The private property at Crabtree Hot Springs is under the jurisdiction of the county sheriff. Please urge Sheriff Mitchell to unblock Twin Valley Road at Crabtree Hot Springs.

Public safety MUST come first. Thank you.

UPDATE Jan 23, 2011 - According to the latest posted message from someone who rode by on their dirt bike, the road blockage was removed, there's no gate or any sign of one, and Twin Valley Road is now OPEN at Crabtree Hot Springs. Thank you.

Often referred to as the (Off-Highway Vehicle)OHV Corridor - Twin Valley Road 17N04 is a designated 40 mile east-west major transportation route across the south end of Mendocino National Forest connecting the Upper Lake and Grindstone Ranger Districts.

NOTE: Twin Valley Road was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933-1934 as a public work relief program for young unempolyed men during the depression.

"The road we worked on went through Twin Valleys, Crabtree Hot Springs, Bartlett Springs resort, and down to the Sacramento Valley. When returning to camp after work we stopped at the hot spring for a nice bath. I think the gas rising from this spring was sulfuric, as we could see dead birds and lizards that had succumbed to the fumes rising from the pool. After a short time in there we rinsed off in a nearby creek. It was very invigorating."

excerpt from the biography of construction worker Charles Willis Bird(1915-1998) personal ID CC9-75941 - served as axeman and assistant leader in Company 997 Middle Creek Camp until Jan 2, 1935.
